Daily Maverick has published a touching behind-the-scenes portrayal of the hardships some of this year's Siyandisa Foundation Scholarship recipients have had to overcome to excel academically and dream as big as they do.
Journalist Puseletso Nthate's interviews with Boitumelo Simela, Charmaine Phoofolo and Emmanuel Mofammere, accompanied by Willem van der Berg's photographs, depicts the harsh realities of their difficult circumstances in vivid detail. It is however upliting to read each pupil has stood strong nonetheless and found the inner strenght and motivation to work towards their dreams of becoming, among others, mechanical engineers, doctors and astrophysicists.
"if I, a random poor village girl, can get 90% and more in my subjects, a B Sc in Mechanical Engineering is most definitely possible,” Boitumelo is recorded as saying.
